Grinding has better surface finishing in workpiece than general cutting. Thespecific grinding energy is very high, most of the energy will flow into theworkpiece, which will make temperature of the grinding zone raise up. Concentratedheat input leads to temperature rise on the surface of workpiece may lead to thermaldamage to workpiece and grinding wheel. Therefore, it is very important andrealistic to research special metallic material grinding temperature for the thermalprinciple exploring and the grinding surface quality controlling. In this paper, the grinding temperature field has been analyzed with theanalytical method firstly. Two thermal models were presented for grinding. Theywere respectively uniform heat flux distribution model and triangular heat fluxdistribution model. The maximum grinding temperatures in grinding zone werestudied by experiment and theory calculation.Secondly, by means of the finite element method (FEM) the equations of thestable and the transient temperature distribution are deduced and according to thesethe grinding temperature distribution model is got, which provides the theoryfoundation for the further research of the grinding temperature.Third, computational model for thermal analysis is established. The papersimplifies the heat source of contact area in grinding as rectangle heat source. Asfor the models, they are divided into hexahedron and solid thermal elements bymaking use of the finite element analysis software-ANSYS10.0. Thereby, thecomputational models of three dimensions that can describe the true status are builtfor dynamic simulation. Focus on the FEM, the trend of grinding temperature fieldof the two metallic material M50steel and grey cast iron are analyzed in detailed.Lastly, the actual depth of cuts, the grinding forces and the maximum contactgrinding temperatures on three metallic materials: M50steel,38MnSiVs6steel andgrey cast iron during the grinding were studied by experiment on a high speedprecision grinder. The merits and processes using thermocouple techniques arediscussed in detail. The research indicated that the FEM simulation analysis for grindingtemperature field are good agreement with the experimental results. But thegrinding temperature experiment is necessary. The simulation analysis for grindingtemperature can indicate the grinding temperature experiment. The production of this paper opens out the internal rule of grinding temperaturefield of metallic material. It is helpful to set up perfect grinding temperature basicsystem info, and it also has certain guiding sense for grinding.
