Nowly, the carbide end mill has become a mainstream tool in the milling process due to their good cutting performance. However, their intricate structure and affecting factors in milling process make it difficult to design and research. The traditional problem has been solved fundamentally with the rapid development of3D graphics software and finite element analysis techniques using in the end mill. The main content of this paper was to use the finite element analysis software to optimize the tool and cutting parameters in order to play the advantages of carbide end mill completely.Firstly, the mechanical model of end mill based on the cutting theory was established by using the finite element method, which theoretically expounded the source and calculation method of the milling force.Secondly, the finite element analysis software AdvantEdge was used to the structure optimization of the carbide end mill. We researched the influence on cutting force and the tool temperature by different geometric parameters in rank angles、relief angles and helix angles, and optimized the tool structure applying the orthogonal test method, and then compared the optimizal results with the original structure to verify the feasibility of the optimization results.Thirdly, as cutting force is one of the most important physical factors in tool design process, the emphasis of this paper was to simulate the cutting process and optimize the cutting parameters with the apply of the finite element software. The paper obtained the influence of different cutting parameters on cutting process and the cutting force prediction model. The cutting parameters were optimized to get the minimum cutting force and maximum machining efficency with applying the genetic algorithm. Finally, the model of solid carbide end mills was built up with the help of the three dimensional software Pro/E, and the finite element software ANSYS was used for the model analysis. The last we study the trend of natural frequencies and vibration mode in different gripping length. The methods and conclusions in this paper resulted from optimization of the structural parameters and cutting parameters to the carbide end mill provide a good reference to the end mill design.
