It’s an important trend of environment-friendly coatings for waterborne coatings toreplace conventional solvent coatings, but the application and development of waterbornecoatings is limited for its insufficient resistance ability to water and chemical. The emulsion isone of the most important determinant factors of waterborne coatings’ performance. In thispaper, we mixed with functional monomers in the shell based on the "latex particle design"ideas for core-shell emulsion, so that the soft phase has a low film-forming temperature andcould film-forming at room temperature. Then the hard phase gave the coatings high hardness,thus improving the overall acrylate latex film properties.The waterborne acrylate emulsion was modified by functional monomers such asfluorocarbon monomer, versatate ester monomer. The core/shell versatate-fluorocarboncopolymer emulsion was synthesized by versatate ester monomer, organic fluorine monomer,acrylic acid monomer. The optimal technologcial conditions about core/shell versatate-fluorocarbon copolymer emulsion were discussed in detail. The results showed that theemulsion had good properties while w(fluorocarbon)=8%, w(versatate)=6%, the ratio of thesoft to hard monomer is1:3in core and the soft to hard monomer is2:1in shell, the massratio of the monomer in core-shell is1:1. the amount of initiator is0.3wt%, the amount ofemulsifiers is3wt%, the core/shell react temperature is82℃/84℃。The conversion is96.5%,the size of latex particle is100nm, the oil contact angle of emulsion film is84°, the watercontact angle of emulsion film is100.5°, the water-absorption ration of emulsion film is6.5%.the adhesion of emulsion film is1grade. The property of core-shell versatate-fluorocarbonemulsion was improved effectively.The preparated core/shell versatate-fluorocarbon copolymer emulsion were characterizedby particle size analysis, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier TransformInfrared Spectroscope (FT-IR) and Energy Dispersive Analysis System of X-ray (EDS) etc.The results show that the emulsion particle is core/shell structure, and have good dimensionaluniformity and homogeneous dispersion. Fluorocarbon monomer and versatate estermonomer has bound covalently to polymer main chain, and monomers completely react. Thefluorocarbon segment can migrate from the emulsion film to surface of emulsion film, andsurface of emulsion film is full of fluorine atoms. This is beneficial to improving the surfaceproperties of film. Therefore, the core/shell versatate-fluorocarbon waterborne coatings hasexcellent properties as water resistance, alkali resistance,dilution stability etc, and it also hassome advantages like strong adhesion, good wettability of the pigment, good film-forming,low minimum film-forming temperature and easy to coating.
