In this thesis, polymerizable acrylate monomer and random copolymer with surfaceactivity were designed and synthesized. By soap-free emulsion polymerization method, it wasconsidered as amphoteric polymer emulsifier and applied to cationic and anionic emulsions.Cationic and anionic emulsions with good performance using for paper sizing were obtained.Specific research and results were as follows:Firstly, taking2-(Dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DM) as the raw material, onenovel amphoteric polymerizable acrylic monomer was obtained by quaternization reaction withsodium chloroacetate (ClCH2COONa). Two phases titration of mixed indicator was used tomeasure conversion and IR spectral analysis was employed to confirm the structure of themonomer. An optimum reaction condition for the preparation of the targeted monomer wasfound: water as the solvent; the molar ratio of DM and ClCH2COONa was1.00:1.05; reactiontemperature was70℃, reaction time was8h and conversion reached94.0%.Secondly, the water-soluble polymer emulsion system was obtained by self-mademonomer under certain conditions with styrene and butyl acrylate. The optimum conditions ofemulsifier synthesis was as follows: AIBN was initiator, copolymerization time was4h andcopolymerization temperature was75℃. The prepared emulsifier was equipped with thecapacity of lowering surface tension of solution.Finally, the above self-made polymeric emulsifier was applied to the soap-free cationicand anionic emulsion polymerization under acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively. Theamount of gender acrylate monomer, dropping time, the type and the amount of initiator,reaction temperature as well as holding time were all studied in this thesis. The research showedthe optimum conditions for cationic emulsion polymerization: the amount of gender monomerwas11%(wt%, relative to the monomer) of the total monomer, dropping time was3h, theinitiator of AIBA was0.6%(wt%, relative to the monomer), reaction temperature was80℃,holding time was1.5h and the mass ratio of soft and hard monomer was1.0:1.5. The researchalso showed the optimum conditions for anionic emulsion polymerization: the amount ofgender monomer was10%(wt%,relative to the monomer) of the total monomer, dropping timewas2.5h, the initiator of K2S2O8was0.5%(wt%,relative to the monomer), reactiontemperature was85℃and holding time was2.5h. The synthetic cationic and anionic emulsionswere delicate and enjoyed better storage stability and higher monomer conversion.
