The rare earth doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser ceramic powders has excellent optical performance, it is also a kind of important laser material. Currently,the study on preparation and the laser spectral performance about praseodymium ions doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Pr:YAG) and samarium ions doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Sm:YAG) ceramic powders have not been reported interiorly.In this paper, the Pr:YAG and Sm:YAG laser ceramic precursor powders were prepared by co-precipitation method and low-temperature combustion method, discusses the reaction mechanism and the main influencing factors. The X-ray powder diffraction analysis were given to the laser ceramic precursor powders, two kinds of laser ceramic precursor powders belong to the cubic system. The infrared spectrum of the two laser ceramic precursor powders were measured, and the vibration modes were analysed. The absorption spectrum of the two laser ceramic precursor powders were measured, the peak of Sm:YAG laser ceramic precursor powders at348nm was found the strongest, and the band of Pr:YAG laser ceramic precursor powders at579nm was found the strongest and the broadest. The fluorescence spectrum of the two laser ceramic precursor powders were measured, the strongest emitting wavelength of Sm:YAG laser ceramic precursor powders and Pr:YAG laser ceramic precursor powders were at598nm and457nm, correspond to the4G5/2â†'6H7/2and P2â†'3H4transitions,and upconversion fluorescence spectrum of Pr:YAG laser ceramic precursor powders was measured, and the corresponding upconversion mechanism was analyzed.
