Synthesis process of the rare earth doped laser ceramic powders is the prerequisite and key for preparation of the laser ceramics. Currently, the study on preparation and the laser spectral performance about ytterbium gallium garnet(YbGG) and erbium-doped ytterbium gallium garnet (Er:YbGG) laser ceramic powders have not been reported interiorly.In this paper, the YbGG and Er:YbGG laser ceramic powders were prepared by co-precipitation method and low-temperature combustion method. It discuss reaction mechanism and many major influencing factors of the YbGG and Er:YbGG laser ceramic powders. The optimum preparation conditions of co-precipitation method for YbGG and Er:YbGG powders:the precipitant is NH4HCO3, pH=7, calcined2hours at1000℃. The optimum preparation conditions of low temperature combustion method:the combustion agent is citric acid, the ratio of combustion agent and the metal nitrate is1.5:1, calcined2hours at950℃.The structure and spectral properties of the powders were analyzed by XRD, SEM, infrared spectrum, absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, up-conversion fluorescence spectrum and other test means. The results indicated that the strongest and the broadest absorption spectrum of YbGG and Er:YbGG laser ceramic powders were found at900nm-1000nm. The fluorescence spectrum of YbGG and Er:YbGG were measured, the strongest emitting wavelength of YbGG and Er:YbGG were at1032nm and1555nm, correspond to the F5/2â†'2F7/2and4I13/2â†'4I15/2transitions. Upconversion fluorescence spectrum of Er:YbGG laser ceramic powders was measured, and the corresponding upconversion mechanism was analyzed.
