The ultrasonic flow meter has been widely used in flow measurement of water supply,electricity, petroleum, chemical industry with its advantages of non-contact measurement,portability and intelligence. In this paper, the ultrasonic measuring device of flow rate of blastfurnace cooling water was designed to improve the current measurement situation of high costs, lowaccuracy, inconvenient maintenance, and complicated to operate.The research object in this paper was flow measurement in on-line detection of cooling waterheat load of blast furnace. To understand the development status and characteristics of the ultrasonicflow meter at home and abroad, a lot of relevant papers and on-line materials were read. Then thepractical measurement environment, including fluid situation and distribution, and factors affectingflow measurement accuracy were analyzed. In view of low accuracy and high costs of the currentmeasurement device, the scheme based on time difference method and external clip-on installationwas utilized in this paper.In order to improve the operation speed and measurement accuracy of device, in hardwaredesigning, the ARM STM32and the high-precision measurement chip TDC-GP2were used on thedevice. As the main controller of entire system, STM32was used to achieve signal control, dataprocessing and data communications. TDC-GP2can directly send the high-speed pulse to drive theultrasonic sensors, achieving the measurement of the ultrasonic propagation time in the pipeline,shielding of interfere signal and calibration of measure time value. In the scheme realizing, thetemperature compensation of sound velocity, the flow velocity compensation of fluid in the pipe, thecompensation of ultrasonic emission angle and other influencing factors were analyzed. Thepractical measurement environment of cooling cycle system of blast furnace wall was alsointroduced. The velocity distribution of fluid in the pipeline was analyzed to choose the bestinstallation location of ultrasonic transducer. Through the analysis of ultrasonic attenuation in thewater, as well as the propagation angle and emission intensity, the best ultrasonic transducer wasselected.The entire system was tested on a laboratory-built experimental platform, in which themeasurement device was calibrated and adjusted, and data processing was achieved. The resultshows that it can reach the standards of the flow measurement. The system has the advantages ofgood stability, high accuracy and low cost which can well satisfy the design requirements.
