The process of integration of Chinese domestic manufacturing industry isspeeding up, considering the rising cost of human resources and the trend ofeconomic development. The original hand-manufacturing and semi-manualmanufacturing industries are facing challenges of industrial upgrading oreven being washed out directly. Nowadays domestic companies still insistinvesting plenty of money into the research of large numerical controllers.But there are rarer proper automatic products on the domestic market for thecost-sensitive manufacturing field. So it is a great worth of developing someautomatic products for these cost-sensitive cases.This article specifically discussed the structure and design method ofautomatic instrument lathe controller, which is based on the processingplatform using W78E516and TMS320F2812chips. This controller containsall basic functions in large CNC and is widely characteristic for its low cost,robustness and easy operation. Considering the non-intuitive operation and low-effective on-machineprogramming problems of traditional numerical controllers, this controller isdeveloped with an interface to read code from USB devices, a LCD andloudspeaker to give operators full guidance during the whole process. Andthis article also provided with a highly accurate interpolation algorithm toaccelerate machine’s cut speed and keep interpolation error within one pulseequivalent during the operation. This article introduced the whole applicationfrom hardware design aspect and software design aspect, and specificallyexplained the design method of each functional module.The prototype of the introduced controller has been developed and is testingin manufacturing plants. The test results have demonstrated its highrobustness and precision. And the feedbacks on its intuitive operatinginterface are positive. Considering its high cost performance, promoting onthe market seems quite feasible.
