The computer numerical controlling (CNC) processing technology is widely applied to mold production, because of its advantages such as high efficiency, high reliability and high processing quality. Furthermore, the CNC program is the key factor to the achievement of these advantages. Therefore, the efficiency and the quality of the mold processing are directly determined by the rationality of the CNC program as well as the processing cost. The machining processes are usually different because of different programmers who have various processing experience. Thus the machining results are varied, which often leads to management confusion. Consequently, it is essential for the quality of CNC program to study how to standardize the machining process maps and improve the programming efficiency.Based on UG/CAM platform, the knowledge engineering technology was applied to the automatic design of the CNC program for molds. The research was conducted from three aspects, including the extractions of standard processing plates, the establishment of knowledge library and the automatic match of processing parameters.Firstly, according to the machining experience of the aluminum alloy, the cast iron and the foam molds, the processing steps and the corresponding processing parameters were extracted. The process plates of the typical molds were set up by making use of the function of customizing plates on UG/CAM. And the manual standard processing plates were established. The mold processing steps were customized normally which improve programming efficiency and reduce errors.Secondly, taking advantage of the KBE technology, the process parameters of the standard plates were built to the following libraries:the example plates, example operations, operation regulations, geometry regulations and the cutters. Thereby the CNC processing technology was expressed conceptually and structurally.Finally, the inference engine of the knowledge regulation library was design by using the integrations of rule-based reasoning and case-based reasoning. The automatic match of the processing geometry and machining parameters was achieved. This accomplishment of the function of automatic CNC processing intelligentizes machining processes and greatly improves the program efficiency.
