High power laser cutting is an advanced manufactory technology, which is complexof optics, electronic, mechanical, process, and material science. The cutting process iscomplex, influenced by many factors, including laser power, cutting speed, the position offocal and the characteristic of material. The quality of cutting would be greatly influencedif the technological parameters were incorrect selected, such as: the roughness of cuttingsurface, gaps or the slag attached to the back of the steel plate. The process parameters aredeveloped often by trial cut in practice, thus resulting in the increase of production cost andloss in efficiency, which prevents the development of technology and the application inpractical production.Taking high power laser cutting of stainless steel plate as an example, the processparameters are contained in this paper, which influence the cutting quality, and systemanalyzed by theory and experiments. The main contents of this paper are summarized asfollow:(1) Based on the model of laser cutting stainless steel plate, some necessaryassumptions are proposed, and certain physical properties are analyzed. The analysisresults show that the preceding properties change nonlinearly with temperature.(2) The focal position has been defined, based on the analysis of mechanism of flaw, amethod of determining the exact position of focal has been set up by controlling the changeof a single factor.(3) On that basis, applying the law of conservation of energy, the heat conductionequation that indicates the function relationship among cutting speed, thickness of steelplate and cutting power is set up. Using MATLAB, the cutting speed would be got byinputting other parameters.(4) The experiments, carried on TRUMPF L3030(produced by German) and NTCTLV-510(produced by Japan), show that the method of numerical calculation of lasercutting speed function is validity and universality.(5) In order to guide the actual production, the influence of auxiliary gas pressure tocutting quality has been analyzed, which is also related to the thickness of steel plate.Results show that the main factors of influencing the quality of high power lasercutting include laser power, cutting speed, focal position and auxiliary gas pressure. Itwould play a guide role if a comprehensive system of process parameters were obtained and this would also avoid blind test, which may cause the damage to electroniccomponents, or the increase of production cost. The paper’s research has been used inChongqing365metal cutting Co. Ltd, which has brought perfect cutting effect, cost savedand the efficiency improved. It also has a certain academic and economic value.
