In recent years, the amount of free-form surface product demand is rising sharplywith the development of industries in China such as machinery, automotiveshipbuilding and defence. The finishing of free-form surfaces is a key part of theproduct manufacturing, it has become one of the important level to measure themanufacturing level of every country. Besides, it has the great significance to improvethe competitiveness of the national manufacturing industry. With the rapiddevelopment of the modern high tecolonogy and the improvement of the CNCtechnology, it has realized the automated processing of the free-form surface. But, thenext grinding and polishing process also need to rely on the machining of man. Themethod of manual polishing is not only inefficient, time-consuming, and alsodemands the workers with high skills. It is difficult to machining the workpiece withhigh quality. It suppresses the development of modern machining technology of thefree-form surface because of many limitations of processing technology. So, usingmodern advanced theory and new tool systems to promote free-form surfaceultra-precision automated production equipment is urgent. Besides, it is imperative topromote the quality and efficiency of the polishing of free-form surfaceultra-precision machining.At present, there are two important means to realize the automation of polishing:One is to rely on the development of automated polishing system for industrial robotequipment; Another automated polishing systems rely on the development of CNCmachine tools. Automated polishing equipment is of great significance to ensure theaccuracy of the workpiece, improve processing efficiency and reduce labor intensity. This paper presents a new idea to achieve the goal of ultra-precision polishingexperiment platform for ultra-precision machining of free-form surface. A3d model isestablished of the ultra-precision polishing experiment platform of free-form surfaceaccording to configuration theory. Finally the ultra-precision polishing experimentplatform of free-form surface is built by hardware research. It provides the equipmentguarantee for research work. On this basis, a new type of tool system is independentlydeveloped which can integrated with industrial robots or ultra-precision CNCequipment. It is according to the geometry information and crafts information of thefree-form surface for machining. The pressure sensor signal is collected by the dataacquisition card, and the force value is displayed in real time for storage through theMicrosoft Visual C++6.0program control software. A experiment platform is built inthis paper for the research of the polishing parameter of the tool system. The speed ofspindle is controlled by the Microsoft Visual C++6.0program control software. Thebest polishing parameter is determined by the experimental research in the set of thetool system. The components with the surface roughness about14nm can beprocessed. This paper provides a new way to CNC equipment for free-form surfacepolishing, which has great significance to improve the level of free-form surfaceultra-precision machining manufacturing of China.
