A working conditions of roadheader is bad, and a cutting mechanism is the corecomponents, so its performance has a direct impact on the structural strength and servicelife of tunneling machine. But cutting hard rock of roadheader exists serious problem ofpick damage. In order to improve hard rock cutting ability of roadheader, expand thescope of application, this paper proposed using of disc cutter replacement pick as thecutting tool. Using a disc cutter cutting hard rock has some advantages such as lowercutting power, higher efficiency, slower abrasion of cutter ring, lower dust quantity, andit makes the roadheader with three characteristics of lightweight, high efficiency,cutting arbitrary shape.In order to research the applicability of disc cutter using on roadheader, this paperimproved the disc cutter structure and size, established a simplified model of disc cutterwith Pro/E, and simulated in ANSYS/LS-DYNA environment. The simulation resultsshow that: the improved disc cutter force remains consistent with the common use ofprediction formula of TBM, and can cut hard rock. Then, the cutting head body wasdesigned and a3D model of the cutting head was builded with Pro/E. Importing it toANSYS/LS-DYNA to simulate to get its load. The Paper analyzed rock simulationresults using color images, animation and so on after processing in the LS-DYNALS-PREPOST, and analyzed the failure regularity of simulation.
