In this paper, the basic principles of rock cutting with disc cutters and some estimate formulas of disc cutter cutting forces are introduced, and the force of single disc cutter is analyzed on this basis. Moreover, the applicability of estimate formulas are discussed in different geology. There is significant reference value for TBM designer and researcher to calculate disc cutter cutting forces and intensity, and so on. Then, the method of establishing finite element model for disk cutter cutting rock in ANYSY is introduced, and the model is analyzed in LS-DYNA. The analysis results well explain the reason of the weariness breakage and side move of cutter ring. The numerical simulation establishes the foundation for the researchers in this field. They may optimize cutter ring and study on disc cutter cutting rocks in different geology and different penetration in ANSYS by the numerical model. Finally, the lay rules on cutterhead with disc cutters are discussed, and cutterhead plot is drawn according to the TBM being employed in First Phase of West Project of South-to-North Water Diversion.
