During the mass production of automobile gears and motorcycle gears, hobbing-shaving-honing process or hobbing-grinding process is generally used. Due to the high efficiency and the low cost of gear shaving, hobbing-shaving-honing process is more widely used in gear production. As the important tools of gear processing, gear hob and shaving cutter, which have complicated structure and strong appropriability, should be tailor-made to satisfy the requirement of the process in most cases. However, the traditional design method depends on designers’manual work to complete the calculation of design parameter and the drawing of production drawings. Because of the heavy workload, the long design cycle, the low precision, and error prone, the traditional design method cannot satisfy the needs of gear processing industry. Therefore, it has an important theoretical significance and practical value for research and development of a set of parametric design platform for gear hob and shaving cutter.Be aimed at the requirement of production applications of the parametric design platform for gear hob and shaving cutter, this paper has an in-depth study of the parametric design method and applicability check method of gear hob and shaving cutter and the design and development process of the platform separately. The main work and achievements are as follows:(1) It probes into the calculation methods and selection rules of the parameters of hob’s external structure and tooth profile with the design data surveyed from gear enterprises. Moreover, it expounds the design method of hob with small pressure angle.(2) It expounds the method determining the basic parameters of shaving cutter. Based on the analysis of characteristics of the several common processing methods of shaving, it discusses the calculation methods of the parameters and arrangement of shaving cutter’s chip grooves. Besides, it expounds the calculation methods of shaving angle and relevant parameters and the optimization methods of the key parameters.(3) Based on the principle of gear hobbing, it builds the transformation relation between the tooth profile of hob and the tooth profile of gear, and conjugate curve equations of tooth profile of hob are derived. Moreover, it gives the calculation method of involute form diameter of the post-shaving gear or the post-grinding gear. It derives the calculation method of the minimum theoretical width of the plunge shaving cutter through establishing a mathematical model of shaving process. Besides, for the purpose of the matching design of gear hob and shaving cutter, it discusses the check method of shaving interference.(4) In accordance with the requirement of production applications of the parametric design platform for gear hob and shaving cutter, the overall structure of the platform is analyzed and designed in detail and the platform is developed by using VB.NET programming technology, secondary development technology of AutoCAD and SQL Server database technology.In practice it has been proved that this platform has a good practical value. It has been successfully applied to the actual production and has a good effect.
