Structured packings have good prospects for the application of CO2capture and storage since they offer high mass transfer efficiency, low pressure drop and high capacity. The existing packing tower, however, is unable to adapt to the absorption liquids which have higher viscosity. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new absorption device which can use the viscous absorber. The liquid film is the basic form of the gas/liquid contact in the structured packings, wall with open holes or windows are part of the structured packings. Due to the complicated geometric structural characteristics of the packings, it is difficult to get quantitative analysis results. Therefore, to study the behavior of the liquid film flow over plane plate is more valuable in the development of novel structured packing. In this paper, the flow visualization and high-speed photography were used to determine the basic flow patterns of falling film on the wall and its transformation, the effect of window geometry was also investigated, and the critical condition of the free film flowing in open area were also given. In addition, the wave characteristics of the free film and the wall film also have been studied, and the impact of liquid physical properties on the two different type film were discussed. This provides the deep understanding of liquid film flow behavior and gives the foundation of new packing development. Finally in this paper, wavy motion of the film on the vertical metal mesh was studied.
