Kiln shell and tyre are two important components in rotary kiln and their mechanical behaviors play essential roles in the working condition of rotary kiln. This paper presents numerical simulation on the mechanical behaviors and creative design of the split tyre. These significant results can provide both theoretical and practical references for examination and repair、 design and axial alignment of rotary kiln.The actual model of rotary kiln is simplified in a reasonable way according to the emphasis we need and three-dimensional finite model with refractory is established using three-dimensional solid element SOLID90in ANSYS based on the dimensions and mechanical properties of the components of the large rotary kiln, ignoring the rollers.The temperature distribution is obtained by function interpolation based on the single temperature in single points and is applied to the external of the kiln shell. The steady temperature field distributions of the rotary kiln under two different environment temperatures are analyzed. The results show that temperature declines gradually from the internal of the kiln shell to the external of the kiln shell and the highest temperature close to the material’s temperature lies in the internal surface of the kiln shell. Besides, the refractory provides strong heat protection for kiln shell and most of the temperature differences occur in the refractory.The deformation and stress of the rotary kiln under two different environment temperatures are analyzed. The results demonstrate that stress concentration occurs in contact area between the tyre and rollers in varying degree. The maximum equivalent stress of the rotary kiln increases sharply taking the temperature into consideration compared with published journals, which means that thermal expansion due to the temperature has profound effects on the stress distribution of the rotary kiln and cannot be ignoredA comparable and reasonable connection type of the split tyre is design by comparing different connection types of split tyre. The finite element model of split tyre with rollers is built based on the existing dimensions and its stress and displacement distribution has been analyzed using three-dimension nonlinear contact method. Meanwhile, the stress distribution of split tyre has been deduced by changing the relevant parameters such as the central angle of the boss. Therefore, each of these parameters should be taken into account in the process of designing the split tyre so that the optimum structure can be obtained finally.The roundness of the shell has been calculated when the width of the base plate is 460mm and the effects of various width on roundness have been studied. The results show that width increase practice is limited and the optimum roundness is reached when the width is1200mm.
