Brucite has drawn great attention as a kind of inorganic flame retardants due to itsnon-toxicity, non-volatility, high thermal stability, rich resources. The mechanicalproperties of the composite will make a serious decline when add a large amount ofbrucite, while add a small amount of brucite, the composite will not meet therequirements of the fire retardant performance, because the poor compatibility betweenbrucite and polymer. In this paper, Using different modifiers treated brucite, to improvecompatibility between fillers and polymer; then study the effect of the surfacemodification of brucite on the properties of composite. In this paper, ethylene-vinylacetate copolymer, expoy resin and polypropylene as base material were selected.The surface modification of brucite with different modifiers was studied. Theperformance was performed by the activation index, oil absorption value, FTIR and SEM.The results showed that modified powder has good disperdivity.Modified brucite or modified brucite synergistic modified zinc borate flameretardant EVA was prepared. Effects of different modifiers, the mount of brucite andmodified zinc borate on the properties of EVA composite were investigated. Then theperformance of EVA was measured by SEM, mechanical properties and limit oxygenindex. The results showed that there have good mechanical properties and limit oxygenindex in EVA composite with amino silane coupling agent â…˘ modified brucite. Andwith the amount of brucite increased, the tensile strength and limit oxygen index of EVAcomposite were improved, respectively12.89MPa and28.3%. In addition, in the sameamount of cases, the elongation of EVA with compound flame retardant than theelongation of EVA with modified brucite better, from95.0%to100.3%.Modified brucite or modified brucite synergistic modified zinc borate flameretardant EP was prepared. Effect of the add content ofbrucite on the properties of PP composite were investigated. Then the performance of PPwas measured by SEM, mechanical properties and limit oxygen index. The resultsshowed that25%modified brucite flame retardant PP composite, can get highmechanical properties and limit oxygen index, the oxygen index of27.4%.
