With the rapid development of China’s industrialization, water pollution problems have become increasingly severe, water quality monitoring has become increasingly important. However, China’s current water quality monitoring systems still have some weakness. Automatic monitoring stations usually have limited number, fixed location, and limited monitoring scope. Mobile monitoring equipments, such as monitoring boats or vehicles, usually have the characteristic of high cost, big volume and complex to be operated,they are difficult to be promoted in a wide scale. The goal of this paper is to develop a small mobile water quality monitoring system, which is low-cost, small size, convenient and can be flexibly operated.The main contents of this paper are as follows:(1)The idea to develop a small mobile water quality monitoring system had been proposed after the typical examples of water quality monitoring system currently in China and aboard had been discussed.(2) The overall design of the small mobile water quality monitoring system was completed. The system consists of three parts:the monitoring platform, the mobile terminal, and the monitoring center. The monitoring platform is equipped with several water quality detection modules, and can be able to get water quality measurement result quickly. A camera module can get the images of water and be used for further analysis. The platform has3G wireless communication and GPS positioning functions.(3) The hardware and the software of the monitoring platform had been developed, including hardware design of the platform, Linux drivers and Linux application programs. Application programs of the mobile terminal and the monitoring center had been finished in this dissertation.(4) The preliminary test results of the monitoring system meet the design requirements. The main features or innovations of this dissertation are as follows:(1) Compared with current monitoring stations or boats, the system has the advantages of low cost, low power consumption and portability, etc.(2) A CMOS camera module is equipped in the montoring platform to recognize water color and provide some auxiliary functions for obstacle avoidance movement.(3) The mobile terminal can not only remotely control the monitoring platform, but also get images collected by the camera.(4) The mobile platform has the combination of an electronic compass, GPS and an ultrasonic module for navigation and obstacle avoidance.(5) A solar panel in the system can provide extra energy to support the platform working on water surface for a long time.
