Machinery manufacturing is the foundation of the national independent industrial system, it is considered as a key symbol of the national industrial strength. CNC machine is the strategic equipment of machinery manufacturing. As the key functional part of the CNC machine, the reliability of ball screw directly affects the reliability of the whole CNC machine, and then influences the processing quality and efficiency of CNC machine. Therefore, the development of the according reliablility equipment, the determination of the reliability testing program, and the experimental study on the reliability of the ball screw, have important significance to raise the reliability level of the ball screw.The developments of the ball screw reliability technology and equipment were reviewed, the running states and the actual working conditions were analyzed comprehensively, by which the overall design scheme of the reliability test bench of ball screw was ultimately determined. The reliability test bench, mainly composed of control system, loading system and measurement system, can test different models of the ball screw. Using servo motor as the driving device, loading force provided by magnetic powder brake, the actual operating conditions of ball screw could be simulated, the test parameters such as load, speed, torque could be monitored real-timely, and the reliability data of the ball screw could also be measured real-timely and reprocessed.The experimental studies on the performances of ball screw were carried out using the reliability test bench, the temperature, noise, friction torque and other performance parameters were tested and analyzed, and the improvement measures were put forward. According to the features of the reliability test, combined with the current development of the reliability test at home and abroad, the corresponding reliability test program was designed, the load test of the ball screw was earried out under the simulated conditions, and then the related reliability data and phenomena were recorded, finally, the reliability level of the ball screw was analysed and evaluated.Operation and test results showed that the reliability test bench had been designed reasonably and worked steadily, the reliability data of the ball screw under various kinds of simulation conditions could be measured comprehensively, all sorts of problems produced in actual operation process could be reflected truly, and then the data support for the discovery of the defects and weak links in the design and manufacture could be provided.
