In recent years, the frequent accidents on safety production and the environment pollution effects on the social production and living order,and brought a serious threat and harm to the people’s life, health and property safety. In accidents of sudden environmental pollution emergency monitoring is one of the key link, is the precondition for the processing and disposal of the accident, also is the foundation of the aftermath. Spectrophotometric instruments have advantages of high sensitivity, high precision, wide range of uses, and fast speed, and because of its maturity, at present,spectrophotometry adopt most of them on water and wastewater monitoring methods.Portable instruments based on spectrophotometric method in environmental emergency monitoring technologies and equipments in China occupied an important position. This paper chooses three portable spectrophotometer representatively on the market at present, with formaldehyde detection in water as experiment object, study a number of three instruments’performance indicators through the analysis of experimental data, and make the corresponding evaluation. Providing reference opinions for the purpose of a portable instrument selection and portable instrument research with the detection of formaldehyde in water.Paper outline the concept of spectrophotometry, formaldehyde, introduced the application development of portable spectrophotometric method and the method of formaldehyde detection in water. With formaldehyde as testing material, study the performances of ZZW-Ⅱ multi-parameter water quality tester of Zhengzhou Wote testing technology co., LTD, portable fast spectrometer (PORS-15V) of Beijing Puxi general co., LTD,and water quality performance of the detector (SP-1) which belongs to Beijing Huaxia scientifically create instrument technology co., LTD.Making Zhengzhou city representative of surface water and industrial wastewater as the experimental objects, study the three determination instruments’ detection limit, lower limit, limit, precision, accuracy and standard addition recovery rate, and compare with the laboratory method. Summary the experimental results and make the evaluation on indicators of three instruments. Laboratory comparison method take the HJ601-601<Water quality-Determination of formaldehyde-Acetylacetone spectrophotometric method>.This study through analysis of experimental data, Wote tester is suitable for a wide measurement range, in between1.20mg/L-10mg/L, but the detection limit precision is relatively large; Puxi tester measuring range is0.08mg/L-2.00mg/L, with good accuracy and precision, strong anti-interference; Huaxia meter measuring range is0.12mg/L~3.00mg/L, the precision is relatively good, easy to deteriorate, but the test reagent should be properly kept.
