Along with our economical swift development and the city’s peripheral expansion,a lot of industrial communities move out because of require of new city planning or thestrained land of original site. There has a long “window period” between emigration ofprevious city function and usage of new city function. The original vibrant communitiesbecome to the chaotic and dangerous zones. The factories that have moved out left a lotof waste architectures, which have become a hotbed of garbage and crime. After a very long period of the Foundation of Chinese Republic, facing with suchsituation, our cities always adapt the method of “big buildings lunar month of thirtydays” which is called as the simplest and the quickest way. But as time goes on, theproblems caused by such kind of update method exposed gradually: destructing thecity’s basic, culture and history; causing the dating of traditional life mode; taking citiestrend to be homogeneous; effecting the economy and environment and so on.How to let the declined communities to come alive? How to better handle the oldindustrial buildings? Reconstructing the old industrial buildings, giving them new usefunctions, provides some new ideas for solving these problems. In Europe, compared with the unscrupulous expansion and ambitiousreconstruction, people tend to use the means of reconstruction that could make thedeclined communities become active again. We can get this point from <City Plan toRevive> that began from the1970s: all kinds of reconstruction policies and abundancereconstructions of old industrial buildings integrated its new function on the basic ofsocial extensibility effect, and revived many declined industrial communities. As a city renew tool, reconstruction of the old industrial buildings has been used along time by developed countries, and already has formed a series of theories, and therehave some good reconstruction cases. In this field, China started late and the research ofrelevant theory is weak, and is lack of mature theory system of reconstruction of the oldindustrial buildings. In practice, China is also still in the stage of studying foreignoutstanding project and imitation, and has not been informed its own style. At the sametime, there has uneven development between eastern and western regions, and theoverall level of western reconstruction is low.Chongqing, as the old Chinese heavy industry city and now the southwestimportant city, economic center of the upper Yangtze River, and the national important modern manufacturing base, after the industrial structure adjustment in recent years, faces the situation that a large number of old industrial buildings in riverside area wereabandoned. They occupy the most important parts of the city, but can’t support urbanoperation, and become the breeding grounds of a variety of social issues. This paper tries to select some old industrial buildings in Chongqing riversideareas to do some reform research according to their physical environment. Somerelevant research backgrounds are summarized and analyzed in the first and secondchapters, and the present advanced idea in foreign reconstruction and the problems indomestic reconstruction are found. Closely following the previous two chapters, thechapter three classifies and summarizes the basic reform rules and various commonconcrete transformation strategies. The chapter four bases on the riverside area ofChongqing, firstly, does some investigation and research about the current situation ofthe old industrial buildings in these areas, then classifies these buildings. Select therepresentative one in the different types of the old industrial buildings, and carry onsome physical environmental tests including indoor illumination, indoor temperature, and indoor wind speed. The chapter five, on the basis of the chapter four, analyzes andevaluates the data obtained from the physical environmental tests, then discusses thereform measures after considering all aspects’ factors.
