Material Expression Of Expo Architecture

“Everything starts with World Expo”is a widespread slogan which shows that the Expo plays a great role in improving human spiritual and material development. Every session of the World Expo are the epitome of that era and the World Expo history which has nearly 160 years records the development of modern architecture. PostModernism architecture developes toward diversification, architects exploe and practice in different areas.In the background of architectural science developing so fast and new material emerging continuously, material expression of architecture become another breakthrough point. This emerging design trend develops gradually and was most beautifully described in Shanghai Expo.We are aware of the development of architecture material and realise outstanding contribution of material expression to architecture design.This paper is based on the combination of study on previous Expo and personal experience and feeling about Shanghai Expo.Some theoretical content such as properties of materials, the significance of material expression and the way material expresses are described. While in practice,this paper contains the different applications of material at different times,and also material applications of characteristics pavilions.Theoretical basis about material expression and Expo building practices are Combined in this paper to analyze the changes and trends of material expression in the history of Expo pavilions,so that we can provide a new vision and thinking for architects who are interested in material expression of traditional material and New material.
