The planning of urban landscapes and property development reflects theinteraction of spatial relationships between various functions of the city, between people, and man and the non-human world. With the acceleratingprocess of urbanization in China, urban development has prospered, however, drawbacks and shortcomings still exist behind the prosperity. The prevalentmode of long-term planning of urban spatial form suffers from a monotony ofplanning and construction models. Natural history and landscape systems, cultural history, resources and other factors continue to be ignored. Scientifictheories and methods are short of the planning of whole urban spatial formand of the planning for dynamic and rapid changes in cities and landscapes.Throughout the history of domestic and foreign cities, it can be foundthat numerous cities are established along rivers, such as Beijing. Therefore, there is a great analytical importance in how to plan urban spatial form forthese river cities. This thesis is comprised of three parts. The first part summarizes a broadresearch background. Secondly, by the methods of case studyanalysis, literatary research, and policy research, it illustrates the relationshipand form a coordinated approach between the plan of urban spatial form andrivers could take. This approach consists of three main aspects: first, riverslead to the formation of urban texture; second, the river acts as the frameworkof urban open space; third, there is a mutual response between urban spacevisual effects and rivers.Through site surveys, research and on-site observations, I identified thecentral area of Longqua, in the Mentougou District of western Beijing, as thesite for my investigation and I selected the waterfront region for my designstudy. This region effectively deals with the relationship between the city andthe river, and makes a reasonable site to plan urban space form. The plan actives the landscape function of the riverfront and attracts people to use theconnections between the urban hinterland and the river as public space.Lastly, a further summarization of the relationship between the planning of urbanspatial morphology and urban rivers is carried out along with examples and programsfor strategies of planning and design.
