With the rapid development of China’s road transport, people have morerequirements and pay more attention on pavement performance improving. The roadshould not only meet the requirements of strength, stiffness, and traffic safety, butalso meet the requirements of the passengers and drivers comfort. In order to meet theneeds of safety and comfort of the driver’s and the passenger’s, the developedcountries explore the pavement performance evaluation method based on thephysiological and psychological characteristics of occupant, however, most studieshave only discussed the relationship between pavement roughness and physiologicalresponses of occupants. Researchers in China in terms also had done some researchon the relationship between occupant’s physiological responses and the roadconditions, and these studies most focused on the impact of the road alignmentparameters and the road environment conditions on the driver, the relationshipbetween road performance and driving physiological indicators. Related research hadmade it clear that the road pavement performance would affect the heart rate variabilityindex and the subjective evaluation of occupants, Learning from existing research resultshome and abroad, this paper mainly studied the pavement performance evaluation based onexperimental results.Domestic and foreign studies had shown that there was certein relationshipbetween heart rate variability index and pavement performance status. In this paper, the quantitative relations betweem the heart rate variability index and smoothness andspeed was obtained though analysising the experimental results. Meanwhile, thearticle different paths in Beijing and surrounding areas had also been chosen toconduct the field trial. By analyzing the changes of heart rate variability in the actualroad conditions affected by traffic conditions and road conditions, finally the resultswas concluded: heart rate variability index might reach a certain level in the externalcondition, before and after the certain level the heart rate variability index wasdifferent significantly. Combination of the indoor and outdoor experimental results, the paper finally arrived at the index cutoff value of pavement roughness evaluationbased on heart rate variability analysis. In addition, this paper also studied how the pavement performance impacted on driver behavior, immediately, how the pavement performance affected the driver’sspeed selection. This paper finally the maximum speed the driver chose according tothe different level of flatness was reached through the simulation experiment. And thisresult might be applied in the actual road to control the driver’s speed.
