The spiral involute gear is a new type of gear used in transmission between intersectingaxes, which works just on point-contact of spiral involutes. Meshing principle and design ofspiral involute gears are investigated in this paper. The forming of spiral involutes and their parametric equations are introduced. Equations ofengaged spiral involutes are presented. The conjugation characteristics of spiral involutes areverified through the kinematics method.According to the spatial meshing principle, the tooth profile equations of the spiral involutegear are formulated by means of the tooth profile equations of the virtual rack. The tooth profilesof the spiral involute gear are generated by using MATLAB, and then the precise3-D model ofspiral involute gear is built based on coordinates of points on the generated tooth profiles inPRO/E.Based on the tooth profile equations of spiral involute gears, the mathematical models ofmeshing of the engaged gears are established. Tooth contact analysis is implemented throughMATLAB to obtain the trajectory of contact point on the tooth profiles. The virtual prototyping model of engaged spiral involute gears with orthogonal axis isestablished using ADAMS and PRO/E. The angular velocity curves obtained from simulationshow that spiral involute gears can achieve the constant transmission ratio.Using the software of ANSYS, the finite element model of spiral involute gear transmissionis built. Tooth contact stress and tooth root bending stress are analyzed, which lays theoreticalbasis for the design of the gear transmission.
