Novel torus-involute gears are insensitive to installation error and have a good meshingperformance without tooth modification, which are easy to machine and have a high bearing capacity. This type of gear transmission works on meshing of convex and concave tooth profiles. The toothsurface generation, geometry characteristics and meshing characteristics of these gears areinvestigated. The main research contents are shown as follows:1. According to the processing principle of torus-involute gears and meshing principle, thetooth surface equations of the working tooth surface, the fillet surface and the tooth rootsurface of the convex torus-involute gear and concave torus-involute gear are derived fromthe tooth surface equations of the imaginary rack cutter. The complete and precise toothsurfaces of torus-involute gears are generated via the three dimensional coordinates ofpoints on the tooth surface in MATLAB and solid models are built in Pro/e.2. Based on the mathematical models of tooth surface, the phenomena of tooth undercuttingand tooth pointing of torus-involute gears are analyzed through numerical simulation. Thelimit curves of tooth undercutting, the beginning points of tooth pointing and the maximumtooth width of torus-involute gears are obtained.3. According to the generated tooth surface, the mathematical models of meshing oftorus-involute gears are established by the method of tooth contact analysis. The toothcontact analysis of the gear set under standard installation, center distance installation andaxis installation error are conducted respectively to obtain the contact lines, transmissionerror and the contact regions, which demonstrates the advantage of insensitivity toinstallation errors.4. Using the software of ANSYS Workbench, the FEA of torus-involute gears transmissionunder standard installation is performed to obtain the stress distribution of gears.
