Pod propeller in ship propulsion occupies a large share of the market more than adecade, since it appears. The progress of science and technology will provide a strongmarket for pod propeller. Whether it is in technical or market, Pod electric propulsion willbecome the main development direction of ship propulsion device. It is applied to a varietyof ship types, so it will become the future mainstream propeller.During the voyage, the ship speed and heading should be changed according to actualrequirements. Besides the ship can be impacted by the environment factors such as wind,waves and currents, and the ship will change the speed, deviation from the original course,which needs timely corrections. Speed control and heading control of ship, which get rid ofmanual labor, transit from manual to automatic control, from a single system to systemautomation, from a simple control device to computers, networks and integrated controlsystem.Model is the basis of the ship maneuvering. This paper discussed and established theship motion mathematical model. And it analyzes the model respectively on ship fluid forceand torque, the pod fluid force and torque, and the winds, waves and other exterior load. Inthe modeling process we fully consider motion characteristics of large ship and loaddisturbance characteristics of the winds and waves and the outside world.According to the basic principle of the speed and heading control, design generalizedpredictive controller to control the ship sailing speed and heading. And it is applied to theship navigation control to digital simulation, which compared to the PID control effect.Theresults show that the proposed control schemes is more than conventional control scheme. Ithas better performance than conventional control scheme and it is more robust. In differentworking conditions, the ship speed control and heading control use predictive controller forcomprehensive control to ensure the vessels fast accurately meet established the speed anddirection. The simulation results show that it has reached the expected goal.
