Research On The Characteristics And Experiences Of Urban Planning Of Arid Zones In America

The arid area of world is about6.1billion hectares, accounting for35%of the worldtotal land area. More than900million hectares is extreme arid desert region, and nearly5.2billion is arid, semi-arid zones and dry semi-humid regions. These areas have beenhuman community. Arid zone, have a lot of problems, including the fragile ecologicalenvironment, lack of water, which time and space distribution is imbalance, and soilerosion problems. Therefore, the residential environment construction of arid region,firstly need to solve these problems. We live in northwest of China, which belongs tothe typical arid zones. There are also some problems here, which restrict nationaleconomic development, and even is major threat to human life. Exploring the specialplanning design methods appropriate to the northwest arid regions, in order to guidingthe construction and development of northwest regions, has very important practicalsignificance.This thesis, based on the translation and research of the book-" Urban Planning forArid Zones: American Experiences and Directions" and related foreign literature,establishes that the main object is studing for the America arid area city planningcharacteristics of the seventy or eighty years of last century, because after that time,related issues of America arid area city planning have been solved, and later all theresearch turned to arid area energy.This thesis mainly focuses on the relevant experience of urban planning in Americanarid zones: makes clear the distribution and characteristic of arid region all over theworld; collectes different urban construction and planning research of different aridzones; analyzes the social economic problems of Ameirican arid regions and Americans’ response; summarizes planning and design characteristics of arid regions; takes Phoenix,Arizona as typical case, and researches the process of urban development. Through theexploration from the four aspects above, this thesis summarizes the reference andenlightenment for our country from the Ameircan planning and design experience,which has very important theoretical significance to the arid city development of ourcountry.Therefore, this thesis takes the city planning experience of arid zones for reference, andtrys to get enlightenment of the planning and design appropriate to China, Moreover,expands and applies the arid zones planning experience of United States to to thepractice of our country now. Finally, opens up planning vision of arid zones andenriches the thinking and practice of arid city planning and design, so as to better guidethe planning and construction of arid region.Arid urban planning research aimes to further study the characteristics of aird zones, theproblems and planning methods, the contrast of the ancient and modern, Chinese andforeign planning technique.
