With the increasing requirements of modern traffic on asphalt pavementperformances, the use of fibers reinforced on asphalt mixture will be more widelyapplied. Therefore, three typical gradations of asphalt mixture and two representativefibers (organic and inorganic) were selected to develop the laboratory research onperformances of fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures through a large number oflaboratory tests in order to provide a reference for improving the asphalt pavementperformances.Based on the researches at home and abroad, the different contents of polyesterfiber and basalt fiber were mixed into such the three gradations as AC-13C, SMA-13and OGFC-13, respectively. The tests of raw materials’, physical, mechanical andpavement performances had showed that, compared the two fibers with the zerocontent of fiber, the physical and mechanical performances of these asphalt mixturesare more obviously improved. It was suggested that the optimum contents of polyesterfiber and basalt fiber are controlled at0.2%~0.3%and0.3%~0.4%in the AC-13C, andabout0.3%and0.3%~0.4%in the SMA-13, respectively. In OGFC-13, when theoptimum contents of polyester fiber and basalt fiber, the binder drain-down lossesdescended68.4%and81.0%, and the scattering losses descended40.0%and31.1%,respectively. The durability has greatly improved, and there is a positive meaning toextend the service life of drainage asphalt wearing course. The optimum contents ofpolyester fiber or basalt fiber in OGFC-13are suggested at about0.3%.Through comparing with the test data of the two fibers mixed into the gradations,it was found the improvement of basalt fiber in dense gradation has more obviousadvantages. The tests of pavement performances of fiber-reinforced asphalt mixturessuch as high temperature stability, water stability, low temperature anti-cracking andothers show that the pavement performances of fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures areimproved after mixed into the fibers. From the improvement effects, the basalt fiberinto AC-13C and SMA-13can increase45.5%and43.7%in the DS,8.2%and8.6%inthe TSR, and13.0%and18.4%in the RT, respectively, so the improvement effects areobvious. However, the polyester fiber has a better effects to improve the pavementperformances of OGFC-13.The researches on the pavement performances of fiber-reinforced asphaltmixtures with the three gradations were summarized to analyze the construction technology and the construction quality control of fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures atlast. The results can provide a reference and a guidance for the engineeringapplications of fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures.
