ABSTRACT: Now, the single IGBT module has reached6500V/750A. The development of IGBT greatly improves the capacity and efficiency in converter system, makes the design compacted and the strength of structure high in traction converter. In high power applications, the IGBT generally works in hard switching mode. So the requirements for IGBT driver is high. The gate driver circuit is a connection between the control circuit and the main circuit. It plays an important role in controling IGBT, optimizing the switching performance and protecting IGBT.The main object of this thesis is based on the traction converter system in the electric locomotive and researching the IGBT driver circuit in it. Research the development of power grade and power devices used in locomotive. Combined with the characteristics of the traction IGBT and the market and technology of IGBT driver, summarize the present situation and the development of high power IGBT driver. Based on the research in IGBT transient process, list the characteristics of IGBT driver in traction system.Simulate the fault conditions in tracton converter and analyse the failure of IGBTs and free-wheeling diodes. Find out the cause of the damage from IGBT driver circuit. According to the cause, design a new IGBT driver and build a double pulse experimental platform. On the platform, take a short circuit experiment. Research the VCE protecting voltage and the choice of turn off timing. Take VCE voltage active clamping experiments and analyse the requirements to different type of IGBT. The influence of stray inductance, gate resistance and gate-emitter capacitance on IGBT transient process is analysed.IGBT driver is a key technology in IGBT module application, affecting the performance and security of IGBT module. This thesis introduced the design of IGBT driver detailedly, from driving circuit characteristics analysis to the engineering calculation, and then to the final result of the experiments. Providing a relatively completed ideas to the designers and there is of practical value.
