Urban rail transit is an efficient method to solve the problem of traffic jams in urban area, which has several features such as economizing the land, efficient transit, safety and convenient. The urban rail transit in China has gone into the comprehensively developed period. Due to the highly developed rail transit, passengers have more requirements of the service from urban rail transit station. Specifically, improving passengers’moving efficiency in walking facilities of the station has important functions on improving the monolithic service of stations. However, currently, either when the railway operating organizations evaluate the use of walking facilities in stations or when indentify the scale of walking facilities in station’s design and planning period, they both use the single design index from <The Criterion of Railway Design> as the reference of the design and evaluation of all stations. Under this circumstance, the difference between stations which has different features of passenger flow cannot be reflected.Based on the above problems, this thesis will make research on the fundamental features of passenger flow in the walking facilities of urban rail transit stations. The results of this research can be useful. Firstly, based on the features of passenger flow in different stations, it could contribute to improve their operating management in the future. Secondly, it could contribute to the planning of identifying the scale of walking facilities in urban rail transit stations. Thirdly, it could provide the data for the evaluation and optimizing of the use of the existing walking facilities in urban rail transit stations. Finally, it could provide reference to make more specific transit ability index of walking facilities in urban rail transit stations in the future.Based on the features of the collecting and distributing of passenger flow in urban rail transit stations, this thesis will provide a new method to divide the category of urban rail transit stations. Precisely, stations can be divided as residential stations, business stations, mixed stations, transfer stations, business centre stations, tourist stations and new stations.Then, the researcher will observe and collect the data of passengers’ fundamental features and set up the mathematical relationship model of Speed-Density and Traffic-Density in the walking facilities of stations. After that, the chart of the real transit ability index of different stations can be acquired. Finally, this thesis will analysis the result of research and then compare it with the results of the research of the transit ability of walking facilities of urban rail transit from domestic and international researchers. After that, this thesis will analysis the reason of differences and similarities. According to the result of this thesis, the researcher will provide several recommendations of the selection of transit ability index in different walking facilities.
