With the large number of mineral resource exploitation in China, the separation of waste-tailings become more and more. This leads to the tailings dams’ volume and height increasing, and their security are put forward a higher requirements. The tailing dams are made of loose tailing fine sand tailing silt and tailing mud. And the tailing dam structure usually is consisted of three parts, including initial dam, secondary dam drainage system. The tailing pond is saturated tailing silt deposition in hydraulic action. The tailing dam is different from the general hydraulic structures. With the accumulation of tailings material increasing, its cross-section and height changes. For saturated mine tailing under earthquake conditions, its strength reduce rapidly, especially for loose and medium-dense unconsolidated mine tailings, it is easily affected by earthquake and liquefaction. In this paper, the tailings of physical and mechanical properties are tested, and the static and dynamic stability of tailings dam are analyzed at same time, the large displacement of liquefaction are researched under earthquake.1. The physical and mechanical characteristics of the tailings fine sand soil are tested, including particle analysis test, penetration test, the proportion test, the maximum and minimum pore ratio test, general tri-axial test and compression test, the tailings fine sand physical and mechanical parameters are obtained.2. Study the dynamic characteristics of the tailings fine sand through cyclic tri-axial test, including the dynamic strength properties and liquefaction resistance characteristics. The mechanical laws of the tailings fine sand under dynamic loading conditions are summarized and the difference of the mechanical parameters under dynamic conditions and static conditions are compared.3. Based on the strength reduction method, the stability of tailing dam is analyzed under static conditions, and consider the impact of dry beach length (saturation line position).At the same time, the limit equilibrium method for tailings dam in different conditions are used to evaluate its stability and those two methods are compared.4. To analyze the seismic stability of the tailings dam and make the evaluation by the quasi-static method for the stability of the tailings dam, and then we achieve a stable factor of safety. At the same time, using the numerical methods of analysis, the earthquake effects are taking into account. The stability safety factor of the tailing dam is considered under earthquake conditions. It is made a general summary for tailings dam dynamic response.5. Tailing dam liquefaction under earthquake conditions are considered, the law of liquefaction of tailing dam is summarized including large deformation of liquefaction6. Discussing the tailing dam stability evaluation method under seismic condition and calculate the safety factor in different moment during earthquake. At last the whole process stability is evaluated.
