As the expansion of High-speed railway’s network in China, the number of EMU used for service is soaring. So relate railway operators and scholars pay much attention to how to utilize Electronic Multiple Units (EMU) safely and economically. Except for the EMU needed for assuming tasks assigned by Train Graph, it is necessary for coping with emergencies and maintenance to reserve some EMU. However, reserving some EMU enhance the cost of EMU utilization. Therefore, how to reduce the cost of reserving EMU becomes a vital economy issue. This thesis aims at putting forward method references for formulating practical scenario of spare EMU. The main research content is as follows:(1) Analyze the issue of spare EMU comprehensively. First, explain the meaning of concepts involved and divide the whole issue into two parts:the scenario of hot standby EMU and that of maintenance-oriented spare EMU. Then, summarize the situation of allocating EMU, EMU scheduling and EMU’s maintenance system in China and analyze the relation between them and EMU reserving. Finally, explain two ways of reserving EMU.(2) Study on the allocation scenario of hot standby EMU. On the basis of analyzing influencing factors, do research on three parts of the allocation scheme, the location, number, and type of EMU reserved. To begin with, evaluate all suitable sites by Analytic Hierarchy Processing (AHP). Second, deduce the formulation of computing the number of EMU reserved. Third, put forward some rules for choosing types of EMU reserved.(3) Study on the allocation scenario of maintenance-oriented spare EMU. After analyzing the influencing factors, this thesis converts the process of computing spare EMU number to solving maintenance scheme of EMU. This thesis builds the optimization model of EMU’s maintenance scheme and solves this model by Ant Colony Algorithm (ACO). In addition, discuss how to choose the location and type of maintenance-oriented spare EMU.(4) Take Wuguang Passenger Dedicated Line for example to verify the methods mentioned above. Specifically, design the scenario of hot standby EMU on this whole line and compute the minimum number of maintenance-oriented spare EMU needed by Guangzhou EMU Depot by inputting its rolling stock circulation. Compared with the practical number of maintenance-oriented spare EMU, the number obtained by the method invented in this thesis is less and optimal.
