Kengo Kuma is a famous contemporary architect, who runs architectural firm in Japan and Paris, to take over the projects around the world. Although the project is widely distributed, but they always reflect the unique oriental connotation. Kengo Kuma is not only an architect, but also a theorist, who is good at thinking. He is the author of a number of articles related to architectural theory. He accepts Western culture, at the same time, he consciously reflect on daily life and Japanese traditional culture. Then he solidified his experience in the buildings in a variety of ways.There are three main parts in this thesis:With the bottom-up perspective, Kuma’s design career is divided into four stages according to the time order by Chapter Three, respectively the embryonic stage, turning stage, development stage and mature stage. This part sorts out the information in every stage, which includes the effect of social environment, the characteristics of his works and the development of his theories.With the up-bottom perspective, Chapter Four make a summary of Kuma’s unique ideas which exists in his architectural works. There are three aspects:Tender, Relativity of Matter and Dissolved.Chapter Five focuses on analysis of several tendencies in his works, from the methodology level, which is the guidance of his concept development. The tendencies are Phenomenology, Critical and Japanese Culture.This thesis make Kengo Kuma’s architectural design concepts and design techniques as a research topic. Hope to show not only the theoretical results, as well as the origin and process of works and the theories. Know what it is, and know why it is.Through the deep analysis of Japanese contemporary architect Kengo Kuma, hope to give a practical guidance on the oriental country China’s architectural theory and real projects; hope Chinese architects learn something form Japanese excellent architects and could find our own "Chinese Style" as soon as possible.The whole thesis contains about32000words,48pictures and charts.
