At the age of knowledge economy, service-oriented society is impelling traditional functions of public cultural institutions and facilities including museums to change dramatically. This paper introduces the current rapid development of the museum as an opportunity to clarify the significance and value of visual information design for social communication during the contemporary process of social transformation, on the basis of deep analysis of new concepts, new ideas, new features of the museum, from the perspective of public visual information communication. The main ideas of this paper are:1.the transformation of public cultural institutions and facilities is a necessity for China transforming to service-oriented society, building public cultural service system covering the whole society and constructing a strong power of cultural industries. Effective communication of public visual information is one of the basic measurement criteria.2. We should pay high attention to visual information design and be good at utilizing kinds of media forms, using the design method from the plane to the solid then to multi-dimension space, forming Omni-directional multi-angle exhibition effect and making the public get in it plenary, embodying the high consciousness to service consciousness of public culture from the exterior to the interior.3. Some public cultural institution like museum should be more steric and multivariate to satisfy different social classes thus contribute its maximum efficiency of communication with the social service object.The dissertation is divided into five chapters.The first chapter clearly defines the multiplicity of modern museum concept, which needs impressive understanding, according to the nature and functions of museums under its internationally accepted definition, and makes the concept of "service" run through the public visual information communication design. Take the issue of the art museum, analyze how the art museum complete the visual information design in the new situation according to their different types.The second chapter discusses the relationship between the expanding of contemporary concept of museum cultural industries and visual information design. It is not difficult to find that the history is creating a new opportunity for the development of a museum career at the concept of the museum cultural industry, and perhaps this also means new opportunities for the design community, that is, let the visual information design to be the new important part of cultural strategy for the museum adopted to the new situation.The third chapter mainly expounds how the evolution of the contemporary museum functions promotes the visual information design. Proposed in this paper:"edutainment" turns into the new idea to the development of a modern museum,"understanding the audience" becomes a prerequisite and core of the museum visual communication design,"to make complex information easier to understand and use" becomes the purpose of the design of information display mode for museum, which attracts more audience to enter the museum. The social education function and form of the museum have quietly qualitative changed.in Chapter four, the author chose the Shanxi History Museum, Henan Museum, Hubei Provincial Museum as the inspection object, trying to parse how the museum building and interior space of visual information design create a historical and cultural context through field research and data analysis,and how museum-oriented system design considerate for human.The fifth chapter focuses on the diverse characteristics of museum’s main exhibition information design under the change of museum service concept, that is, how the visual information design effectively conveys the museum exhibition content, and converts it into valuable, meaningful information.Overall, this paper, aiming at museum which is the certain public cultural institution and making serious examinations and analyses, through the more detailed example and data, expounds the significance and value of visual information design for the social communication during the process of transformation in contemporary society.
