Flat-top tower crane is an important hoisting and conveying machinery which is widely applied in construction, installation engineering, water conservancy and hydropower engineering construction, shipbuilding, hydropower station construction and any other fields. Modular design is an advanced product development strategy. Series of mod ular mechanical products developed by theory of modular design has a strong adaptability and flexibility, can meet the customer’s need of diversification and multi-level. In this topic, for meeting the quick and diversified demand in market, advanced modular design and finite element parametric analysis techniques are used in the design process of the flat-top tower crane.The main contents of this article are as follows:(1) On the base of modular design approach is studied sufficiently, the process of modular design for series flat-top tower crane is summed up. Combining with the structural characteristics of the flat-top tower crane and the principle of modular division, ANSYS is secondary developed using ANSYS parametric design language for parametric control the process of creating module, module combination, load solving and resulting output. Finally, the goal of modular and parametric design on the series of flat-top tower crane in ANSYS is achieved.(2) Based on the deep research on constant torque principle about the tower crane design, the boom’s stress in lifting torque curve is reduced when amplitude become smaller, the most dangerous condition of boom occur in the maximum amplitude, the maximum hoisting load conditions is proved. As the flat-top tower crane’s combination patterns is infinite variety, enumeration method is used to do the analysis of combinatorial optimization for realize optimal combination, in which, strength as the constraints, minimum mass as the optimization objective, the most dangerous condition of boom as calculation condition.(3) A system of modular design of the flat-top tower is developed based on the Visual C++tools. In the system, not only a friendly interactive interface is built but also the APDL command can be automatically generated and the model is analyzed on background in AN SYS. The operation of parameter input and analyse become convenient and easy, and the efficiency is increased by the system.The combination of modularization and parametrizatio, the rapid modular design of series of flat-top tower crane is achieved by the system that modular design of the flat-top tower. The system has been successfully applied in the actual project that the development of YLY-7030flat-top tower crane.
