With the development of human knowledge to the ecology, wetland is becoming to be the focus which public pay attention to. In nowadays government has planned a large-scale wetland construction for the reason that people can get close to nature and protect wetland in this way. But there"re still a lot of designers imposing their conceptions to the wetland only by the analysis on maps and some written information. Such as boardwalk, thatched pavilion and the water pool with lotus these same kind of symbolic features can be seen everywhere. The places where own these features are recognized as losing their place characters that causes ihe landscape of wetland to be identical.During the developing process of our eco-system. more and more natural wetland presents to us another attribute of social culture with the participation of humans, and we call this type secondary wetland. It isn’t enough if we are going to renovate these landscape which own unparalleled place characters that will not be easily changed only by expert knowledge. So the essential problem is how to gather and understand the place character of these wetlands in a thorough way. In many landscape design programs of wetland, it is not difficult to find there are a lot of experts who make the design and give advices totally in their expert opinion. They use their professional knowledge to identify which characteristics and attributes are vital, but this way may cause another problem is that we make decisions only by experts suggestion while ignore the perceptions and environmental value of the public. In this research, a way that combines quantitative method and qualitative method is used for gathering public perceptions of the place character by map projection, participant observation and rating scale which based on the public users view. This method is used in order to direct our design and help us to know which place character is we have to protect, and which type of landscape can be accepted both by local persons and tourists. In the last chapter. I will get a design of Jiu Liancheng Wetland Park for an example to illustrate the directive function of the research on place character through the anaiysis of some points such as protection, utilization, art, culture heritage, function and form.
