Masonry structures were met with varying degrees of damage among previousearthquake in our country. Especially in Tangshan earthquake, Wenchuan earthquake,Qingchuan earthquake, a large number of multi-storey masonry structure collapsed,causing a very serious casualties and economic losses. According to domestic andinternational research. the major earthquake damage of multistory masonry buildingscan be summarized for the cracks of the wall, the local collapse of housing and overallcollapse of housing. the destruction of the wall under window is a universalphenomenon found in the previous earthquake, but has not been taken seriously.Failure modes of the windows under wall are both ends of the vertical crack, a slightcross cracks, severe cross cracks and completely fall caused by structural collapse.Earthquake damage of the wall under the window also affects the seismicperformance impact of structure., affects earthquake-proof goal " never damage inminor earthquake, never collapse in big earthquake ", and the seismic performance ofthe wall under the window is an important factor in the collapse of housinganti-impact to the earthquake zone of life and property safety, so the impact of itsseismic performance must not be ignored. However, this problem seems to have beenignored all the time, the seismic design of buildings is only set forth requirements forseismic check of the spandrel, but seismic check of the window under wall is notclearly ruled. So it’s necessary to study the seismic performance and failuremechanism of the wall under the window, and the seismic performance of masonrystructures and resistance to the collapse of its seismic design in order to put forwardsome reasonable proposals for seismic design of structure, to guarantee the structurehas a good seismic performance, reduce the masonry structure of earthquake damageand collapses of houses, and reduce the casualties in the quake zone and loss ofproperty.According to the "strong column and weak beam" thought, can be seen as is thehorizontal component, and as the vertical component, we must first ensure the seismicperformance of the wall between window to avoid its damage, so that the wall between window destructs before the wall under window to let the wall betweenwindow consume at least part of the seismic performance, and to alleviate thedestruction of the main structure, that is, we must first ensure the security of thevertical component, because the destruction of the vertical component will lead to thecollapse of the whole structure.
