The road milling machine is a special and highly efficient equipment for road repair and maintenance, it’s mainly used for maintenance and renovation of roads, airports, freight yards and parking lots and other asphalt concrete surface. With the construction and development of Chinese highway, the road maintenance operations have become a concern and an important research topic of road related industries, it’s providing a broad prospect for the development of the milling machine in the country. At present, the performance of domestic milling machine has to fully meet the demand of maintenance work, but compared with foreign products, it’s still a big gap. On the one hand, the independent production of engines, hydraulic components and accessories are less; on the other hand, the research and development of the tool is less, it’s basically borrowed the introduction of foreign tool, the overall trend is the lack of theoretical knowledge and experience of the tool, the tool with high-end simulation software to optimize the technology and platform and the lack of the experiment. This paper takes2meters milling machine as the research object, adopting the modern design method, using the finite element analysis of LS-DYNA with the ANSYS software for the cutter with penetration pavements simulation analysis, and the cutting tool parameters were optimized. The main research contents:1. Analyses the status quo and development trend of the road milling machine, introduce the the type, structure, work characteristics, the composition of the milling tool of the road milling machine;2. Studies the tool design and tool layout of milling machine. Discusses the main parameters that affect the tool design, the tool arrangement and installation is described in detail;3. On the existing basis of the theory, it’s further processed the motion analysis and force analysis for the milling cutter;4. Applicating nonlinear finite element for the analysis of stressed tool, using LS-DYNA combining with ANSYS software to a single tool with penetration pavement simulation, and that the stress and deformation distribution diagram of the cutting tool-pavement materials in milling process were given,the results can be used as reference of the tool option and engine choice;5. According to the analysis of the process of the milling movement, the equation of the cutter motion and the function of the cutter anti-interference milling were established, the power, speed and milling depth and other parameters of the milling machine were analysed and resolved. Besides, with the use of MATLAB simulation, the characteristic relationship between the speed and the milling depth has be educed, respectively. While under the establishment of the cutter milling mathematical model of optimization, the tool parameters and milling parameters have be optimized.Modern design method of the finite element method and optimization design used in the milling cutter has a more mature reference, but it is not perfect, the paper by using nonlinear finite element method, the milling of the cutter is studied, it’s providing a guiding significance for the development of milling tool in the future.
