Road milling machine is one of the key equipment on repairing and maintaining road.Using the Road milling machine to mill the damaged pavement layer, and then laying a newlayer on the milled road is one of the most economic modernization road maintenance method.Because of the increasing of highway construction in China, and the number of the roadneeded to be repaired and maintained is increasing, Market demand for milling machineincreases. In order to reduce the milling machine production costs, and to improve thecompetitiveness of their milling machines in the market, many domestic manufacturers havetried to design their own milling machines. However, many manufacturers design with theanalog design method that by referencing to the foreign models, which has increased the gapbetween domestic products and foreign product. For the domestic manufacturers, theirresearch on the milling rotor which is the core components of the milling machine millingrotor is very deficient, and they don’t have a theory to design the milling rotor. So, manydomestic manufacturers buy the imported milling rotor and install in their own millingmachine. Load analysis of the rotor in the milling process is also very important, because theload estimation of the rotor in the milling process is the basic parameters for design themilling Hydraulic System.My paper introduces a design theory which by analyzing the spiral structure on the rotorto complete the design of the rotor. By analysis and the calculation to determine the rise angleof the spiral structure, as well as spiral outer diameter, and provide a theoretical referencefor the structural design of the rotor. And this paper describes the principle of the toolarranged on the rotor and write programs in MATLAB according to this principle to make thetool layout could appear automatically, which improves the efficiency of the design of therotor. After completing the structure design of the rotor, we should analyze the rotor’s load.This paper analyze the effect of controllable factors in the working process of the millingmachine on the rotor load, which includes walking speed, milling depth and the rotationspeed of the rotor. The rotor load’s analysis can provide a reference for designing the milling hydraulic system, and also provide the guidance for the operator on using the millingmachine rationally in construction. This paper also uses the test data to verify thosecontrollable factors’ influence on the milling system load.
