Modern power system is developing continuously to the direction of large capacity and large units and along with the power system’s expansion of the scale and complexity of structure, short-circuit current levels of the electric grid improve continuously. System short circuit fault usually cause serious power quality problems such as equipment damage and voltage dips, so, now it has become an important factor that constraints the operation and development of the power grid.This paper expounds the course of development of Fault current limiter in detail, and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of various traditional FCL, and based on this, advances a new type of parallel type multi-target short circuit current limiting device, that not only can restrict short-circuit current, but also can carry out active filter and reactive power compensation.This thesis mainly uses the EMTDC/PSCAD simulation software for digital simulation, develops low voltage devices with the capacity of400V/100KVA based on simulation based on DSP and FPGA. Through analyzing the data of the test, validates that the device is practical. In addition, discusses the problems that should be paid attention to when the device is used in the power grid in practice, and outlooks the development prospect positively on the later.
