Continuing The Urban Collective Memory In Urban Renewal

In the course of human social development, as the important carrier and content of collectivememory urban form, urban lots, and urban spaces have become the basic reference toidentity and spiritual belonging when memory the city. Continuation of collective memories isone of the most important foundations for recording history of city and construction of thecity’s spirit. At present, the growing urban renewal and reformation process inChina, any action to destroy the urban collective memory is likely cause irreparable damageand regret. Today, much attention has been paid in the research on humanities, history andculture, more and more unmovable culture relic, historic district had been protected.Meanwhile, as the main components of the city, so much unprotected historic districts hadbeen destroying with urban renewal. These are the most components of urban collectivememory. This thesis based on the writer’s longtime practice of architecture and urban design,discussed the typical characteristic of urban collective memory in the district or block, and tryconcluded and summed up an architectural design methodology are universal, in the hope ofraising some constructive suggestions to continue the urban collective memory in the urbanrenewal, especially for the unprotected buildings and historic districts.
