Smart Grid is the new grid using modern measurement technique, communication technology, computer technology, automation technology and so on that allows renewable energy sources connected to the grid and improves the energy conversion and transmission efficiency of the power network system. The key technology of Smart Grid is consisted of four parts:Advanced Metering Infrastructure, Advanced Distribution Operation Infrastructure, Advanced Transmission Operation Infrastructure and Advanced Asset Management Infrastructure. The main technologies and functions are including:Smart Meter, Communication Network, Measurement Data and Management System, Customer’s Network, Remote on and off.This topic is the application of SoC in the design of Smart Meter which belongs to Advanced Metering Infrastructure. The purpose is to realize the functions of power parameter measurement, remote communications, remote communication and parameter management. In electricity, tariff is the key. With the development of Smart Grid, Smart Meter draws unprecedented attention. The Smart Meter can not only show the customer’s electricity consumption and the tariff, but also charges the electricity energy according to different time period which will promote the new way of electricity and life. Besides the function of electricity energy measurement, there are grid monitoring and real-time bidirectional communication network that to transmit the information including the failure alarm and interference alarm from Smart Meter to the Data Center.The paper uses71M6543chip of Teridian Company to design Smart Meter. The purpose of this design is to realize the functions of electric parameter measurement, grid monitoring and alarm, remote transmission of measurement data and so on.Firstly, the paper designs the hardware circuit to change the current and voltage into the AC signal that ranges from-250mV to+250mV, and then sends the signal to the main chip to calculate the current, voltage, energy and tariff. Secondly, the Smart Meter calculates the parameters to display in LED module and storages the parameters with the use of an external EEPROM memory. At last the Smart Meter communicates to the upper computer. This function can be realized in two ways. One way is the71M6543communicate with the slave MPU of STM8by SPI communication, and then transmit the data to the upper computer by the slave MPU. The other way is the71M6543communicate with the upper computer directly in Modbus protocol. The71M6543has the function of optical interface. When power outage happens unexpectedly, the user can get main information of the meter by the way of optical interface.
