Nowadays, the electricity shortage and energy crisis are increasingly serious,wind power as a form of clean energy, has the most large-scale development andutilization prospects, increasingly got the attention of the world. With the increasingwind power capacity, the impact of large-scale wind power on power system becomesincreasingly serious. Reactive power compensation as an important measure toimprove the power quality of wind farms and to enhance the system stability, has beenwidely used in wind farms. Static Var Generator(SVG) as the most excellentperformance of dynamic reactive power compensation devices, represents the directionof development of the reactive power compensation. In this paper, the role of SVGunder normal and failure operations of the wind farm are researched.First, the three kinds of commonly used dynamic reactive power compensationdevices’ working principle、control strategies and the measurement of performancesare introduced. Through field test, the performances of the three devices are tested.According to the test results,the performances of the three devices are compared.Then using one of the large wind farms in Jiuquan wind power base as a researchsubject, the impacts of large-scale wind power on power system are researched,including power quality problems under normal operation and the system voltagestability under fault conditions. The role of SVG under normal operation and faultconditions are simulated, And through field tests, the role of SVG under faultconditions in wind farm is verified. According to the problems when testing staticdynamic response time of SVG, the control parameters which affect dynamic responsetime are adjusted, to meet the demands of the wind farm operation.Finally, According to the operation problems of dynamic reactive powercompensation devices, a hybrid reactive power compensation system is researched.Working principle、system components and control strategy of the hybrid reactivepower compensation system are analyzed, And the ability of hybrid reactive powercompensation system providing reactive power support for wind farms when the windfarm voltage drops is simulated. The simulation results show that: when thepoint-of-common coupling of wind farm voltage drops, Hybrid reactive powercompensation system can provide greater reactive support than using SVG alone, thusspeeding up the failure recovery of the system.
