But in fact, as the most basic context of architecture design, residential building design also needs to be focused on from theory to practice. Glenn Murcutt is an architect who really know how to insist his own principles in this changing world.Focusing on the practice of house design, he finally became a worldwide reputable architect after decades of hard work.Therefore, the research of the work and idea of Glenn Murcutts is meaningful to the methods and contents of practice for Chinese architects in the contemporary context. Also the practice in Australia by Glenn Murcutt expand our studying horizon and enrich the examples needed by the development of architecture design concept.This paper is based on the background of the times and territory.It overview the development and function of the residence in modern architectural progress. It also summarizes the house design by the architects who have acquire Pritzker Architecture Prize which has been won by Glenn Murcutt and made him well-known. After a comprehensive investigation of the selected cases, the research arrives at a conclusion of the design idea and method of Glenn Murcutt, which is a progress from questions to answers about natural, cultural and technology in the pursuit of simple and natural way of life and adhering to the architect occupation under the principle of faith.Finally,the author put forward to three aspects of the inspiration which Glenn Murcutt give us with divergent thinking.Firstly,the Chinese architects in confusion can found great illumination in Glenn Murcutt’s methods of practice. Secondly, the characteristics presented from Glenn Murcutt’s works give the development of Chinese residential building the enlightenment of localization,humanity cultural and sustainable.Lastly, the design concept and methods of Glenn Murcutt provide plenty of stimulation for the hot topic from construction theory nowadays, with the purpose of arousing reflection widely and deeply.
