There are many problems about monitoring traffic signals, such asfixing ways of collection and analysis of traffic signals’ fault features,communication path of fault information, precious and real-time ways ofremote monitoring, et al. According to the study of problems as below, wedesign and implement a faulty-monitoring system for traffic signal lightsbased on WebGIS. This paper is in order to solve these problems. Followingare the main contents in this paper:A lot of network coverage and investigative journalism are collated andcollected. It’s recorded many kinds of typical fault of traffic signal. Thensecurity levels are assigned to each fault according to actual conditions. Formany kinds of traffic signals, full screen light signal, arrow light signal andcountdown light signal, electrical features are analyzed under a variety offault conditions.Designing of electrical fault-detector module of traffic signal.This moduleis consist of many parts, including terminal detectors based on the51microcontroller which is installed in traffic lights, ARM9-based embeddedmain controller which is installed at the intersection and RS-485bus withmulti-point communications capability. RS-485bus is used to be thecommunication medium of detection terminals and the main controller. Theoperational status of traffic signals is identified by detection terminals. Acomplete RS-485bus-based communication protocol for detection terminalsand main controller is customized, which is used for transfer the controlinformation and fault information. Summary of the detection results from thedetection terminals is collected by main controller.Also it can exchangeinformation with remote monitor.Designing of fault-transferring module which is based on GSM. Siemensindustrial GSM module,TC35i, is used for remote communication,which isreal-time, anti-interference and stable.Fault-transferring module is consist of transmitter which is connected to main controller in fault detector module andreceiver that is connected to a remote monitoring computer. AT command setis used to transfer the operational status of traffic lights in the form oflong-distance transmission of message.4. Designing of remote monitoring module which is based on WebGIS.Monitoring module is based on B/S mode. The monitoring site is based onMVC (Model, View, Control) architecture, using Java-based developmentframework, including Struts2, Spring and Hibernate. The embedded ofmonitoring WebGIS functionality was realized by JavaScript-based API.According to the fault information collected by GSM receiver and the name offault, latitude, longitude and fault level, etc, real-time monitoring andmanagement is in progress in the WebGIS-based map.
