In the production process, the metal-cutting is one of the basic processing andmanufacturing technology and it determined the machining accuracy and processingefficiency. With the development of science and technology, a variety of difficult materialscontinue to emerge and applied to the practical production and daily life, so the problems oftool’s wear and service life requires us to find new solutions. After hundreds of millionsyears of evolution, animal teeth, claws, toes and other organs have formed excellentbiological properties, it can reduce the cutting resistance in the eating process. It providedthe biological basis of the cutting performance of bionic research. In this paper, based on the knowledge of biological characteristics of the beaver, thebeaver’s teeth was analysed in terms of geometry and mechanical property respectively.Firstly, the geometry was measured and analysed by means of the digital vernier caliper. Then, the beaver’s teeth was subject to three-dimensional laser scan to obtain cloud data, according to the principle and ideas of reverse engineering. Subsequently, the datacorresponding to the geometry was processed, including cloud data processing, the featureline extraction, curve line formation, surface reconstruction, surface error analysis, with theaid of Imageware software and the resulting three-dimensional model was established inSolidworks software. In addition, the surface hardness of the beaver’s teeth was measuredand analysed by means of MH-3digital microscope. The internal microstructure of thebeaver’s teeth was analysed and investigated based on SEM and the contents of themicro-elements constituting the teeth were acquired by means of EDS. These researchresults pave the way for the subsequent investigation of bionic cutting tools.
