Double-skin facade (DSF) has attractive appearance, and at the same time, savesHeating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) energy of buildings compared withsingle-skin facade (SSF), as DSF has good shading and heat insulation performance insummer and heat storage effect in winter. Naturally ventilated DSF is widely used in hotsummer and cold winter areas, due to its simple control strategy and conservation of fanpower compared with mechanically ventilated DSF. However, due to the lack ofmethod for effectively and analyzing the ventilation and heat transfer performance ofDSF, the quantitative evaluation and optimum design of naturally ventilated DSF aredifficult. To solve this problem, the following works were done in this paper:Firstly, literature reviews were made and the paper pointed out that numericalsimulation method for calculation natural ventilation in DSF should be improved andverified, and that a complete evaluation system for analyzing the performance of DSFshould be designed.Secondly, an economical and practical Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)method was designed for the calculation of ventilation and heat transfer in DSF, whichsolves several key problems in existing researches.Thirdly, a series of field experiments were performed to validate the computationalaccuracy of CFD method. Besides, the feasibility on the adoption of porous media toreduce meshes and in the case of venetian blind shading device was verified.Fourthly, an evaluation system suitable for analyzing the thermal performance ofnaturally ventilated DSF was promoted. The averaged solar energy transmittance incooling season was designed as the main evaluation parameter.Fifthly, an optimum design of naturally ventilated DSF in Beijing area wasperformed on the basis of the designed CFD method and evaluation system. The work in this paper can provide a reference in the analysis and optimum designof naturally ventilated DSF under different climate conditions.
