With fast growth of economic and traffic volume, a large number of expressways, whichwere built in early period, face the pressure of expansion. These expressways have been intothe expansion stage. The expressway expansion is the main task of road construction, it’sorder to service economic and social activities. Expressway extension is a system work, whichincludes elements of construction organizations, transport organizations. The study of the keytechnologies of expressway expansion has an important significance to the smoothimplementation of the extension project.Based on the analysis of relevant research results and the reconstruction project, thepaper studies the vehicle diversion, raffic capacity and segmentation of work zone. Combinedwith analysing the influence factors of vehicle diversion, the different vehicle diversion of theexpansion projects in domestic was summarized. The paper proposes the selection program ofvehicle diversion which based on project characteristics. Based on analysing the influencefactors of traffic capacity, the paper discusses the correction model of traffic capacity. Byanalyzing the traffic capacity of basic section of highway and ramp of interchanges, the paperstudies the traffic capacity of the structures along the expressway expansion period. VISSIMsimulation software was used to study the segmentation of work zone, based on the projectcharacteristics, the paper proposes the program of optimal work zone length. The research results is reference value to the project of expressway reconstruction, it isimportant to improve the traffic capacity and ensure traffic safety in the reconstruction area.
