Self-propelled cutter suction dredgers are widely used in dredgingworks. Due to the characteristics of the job, the ship is always set largenotches to load special equipment. Research object of this article is aninland large self-propelled cutter suction dredger which has double oars, double rudders and double tail fin. A primary pile of spud carrier openingand a secondary pile opening are in bow. A bridge slotting is in stern. Thevessel is to improve the sedimentation owing to sediment accumulation influctuating backwater area of Three Gorges Project. Due to thecharacteristics of the vessel, there is no information to learn from otherparent ships. To get an accurate prediction of resistance, model towingand self-propelled test were done to measure the resistance whenresearched the ship scheme. The researches on resistance performance ofspecial ship were usually based on model tests before. With thedevelopment of computer technology, CFD (Computational FluidDynamics) method has been more and more widely applied to the field ofdesign and research. Compared to the traditional model test, CFD methodhas excellent flexibility and economy. It can also simulate complexphenomenon which is difficult to actualize in towing tank. The resistance performance of the vessel is studied by experiments andCFD calculation method in this dissertation. It mainly investigates thefollowing contents:1. Model resistance test. A series of model tests of deep and shallowwater were performed in the towing tank, which measured hydrostaticresistances under different speed values.2. Numerical simulation of deep water resistance. The model issimulated based on CFD method, and the hull resistance and the freewave surfaces under different speeds are obtained. By the comparison ofthe experimental data and the CFD calculation results, further identifyingthe cause of this type of ship resistance.3. Numerical simulation of shallow water resistance. Using CFDmethod for numerical simulation of shallow water, and the hull resistanceand the free wave surfaces under different speeds are obtained. Compareexperimental data with CFD calculation results. Flow field distribution ofthis type of ship is analyzed, to further understand the resistance causeand effect of shallow water of ships sailing in shallow waters.4. Effects on resistance due to changing ship type. There are deflector, openings and slotting. Respectively, Using CFD method for numericalsimulation of different ship types in deep and shallow water, to resrarchthe effects on resistances, free surface waves and flow field distributioncaused by changing ship type.
